剪定は盆栽の伸びた枝や乱れた樹形を整えるために必要な作業です。一般的に盆栽の枝の先端に付いている数芽の成長は活発ですが、枝の下の方にある芽は休眠状態です。そのため、先端の枝や成長が活発な枝を切ることで枝の下にある芽の成長も活発になり、新しい枝も増えてくるので、盆栽全体にバランスのよい枝配りが期待できます。この剪定を行わないと枝が伸びて樹高になってしまい、盆栽がまとまりのない乱れた樹形になってしまいます。
また剪定により新しい新芽が出てくることで葉が増え、栄養分も増加して盆栽の成長が活性化されます。剪定によって、盆栽の内側まで日当たりが良くなるので盆栽にも養分がいきわたり、風通しも良くなり、虫も付きにくくなります。
